Urinary Tract Infections (UTI's) are the most common bacterial infection in women and account for a significant number of all doctor visits. The elderly are at an increased risk for developing cystitis due to incomplete emptying of the bladder associated with many of the conditions that accompany ageing.
The cells lining the urinary tract are coated with mucous which prevents bacteria from adhering to the urinary tract wall. Infection occurs from bacterial growth within the otherwise sterile environment of the urinary tract. Cranberries contain proanthocyanidins , components which have been shown to prevent the UTI-causing bacteria, E coli, from adhering to the walls of the urinary tract and colonising there.
The patented extract used in the Thompson's ULTRA Cranberry, Cran-Max, is actually clinically proven to be effective in the reduction of lower UTI's such as cystitis. ULTRA Cranberry works by effectively preventing the adherence of harmful bacteria to the walls of the urinary tract.
ULTRA Cranberry utilises Cran-Max (clinically tested cranberry extract) which features a very high (34:1) concentration of whole fresh juice powder. This equates to 17,000mg per capsule. The unique Cran-Max extract combines Cranberry fruit with Cranberry juice concentrate to replicate the phytochemical profile of whole Cranberries. This process maintains high levels of therapeutically active phytochemicals including organic acid, anthocyanins, proanthocyanins and lignins.
Many nutrients may be destroyed by the high acidity of the stomach and not reach the intestine where they need to be absorbed to exert a therapeutic effect. However, ULTRA Cranberry utilises patented bioshield technology, proven to allow the bioactives to survive the stomach acid and pass in to the lower GI tract. (Tested against both Cranberry juice and an ordinary cranberry supplement).
Two capsules daily are recommended to assist in the management of UTI's.
